초록
This paper discusses the establishment of modern academic knowledge in Japan through examining the case of Inoue Tetsujiro. We can find many problems in applying the term of “philosophy” to premodern Japanese ideas. So some scholars have made differentiation between “philosophy” and “thought” in Japanese history. I argue that we should pursue the question of how Japanese modern “philosophy” and “thought” were located in society and were substantialized within academic knowledge from the perspective of the establishment of modern academic knowledge. Japanese “history of philosophy” and “history of thought” should be also understood in the frame of modern institutions of knowledge. This paper examines how Inoue Tetsujiro, who made enormous contribution to the establishment of momodern academic knowledge in Japan, constructed the “history of Japanese philosophy.” Inoue's categorization and approach to the thoughts of the Edo period became an embedded structure within the study of history of philosophy. When Japanese attempted to create their own tradition of “philosophy” from a perspective of Western philosophy, what they adopted was the frame of the “history of philosophy.”
