초록
In spite of the prominent role the concept of Romanità played in Italian Fascist's appropriation of the ancient Roman past and it's construction of supranational vision of modernity, both in discourses and in practices, historians of Fascism have not payed due attention to this important issue. Through the analysis of two events, that is, the massive restructuring of Roman cityscape and the Augustan Exhibition of Romanness(Mostra Augustea della Romanità), I try to show that the Fascist obsession of the Roman Imperial past during the ventennio was not nostalgic propaganda of anti-modernism but a ambitious project of constructing alternative vision of Fascist modernity and making it visible to Italian people. In this sense Fascist modernity based on Romanità which was both supranational and imperialistic, can be seen as a Fascist mode of mission civilisatrice.
