Abstract
The “Songsa-jeon”(The Filtering of A History of Song Dynasty) compiled by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty is a historical book that abridges and revises the “History of Song”(宋史), which records the history of the Song Dynasty in China. There have been numerous studies on the “Songsa-jeon” in both domestic and international academic circles from various perspectives. However, research on the ‘historical critiques’ included in this book is scarce. At the end of the ‘Annals’(本紀) and ‘Biographies’(列傳) sections of the “History of Song”, the recorder's critiques are appended. In addition, although not explicitly labeled as a ‘preface’, critique-like writings are also included at the beginning of each ‘Treatise’(志). King Jeongjo separated the articles and historical critiques in the “Songsa-jeon” during the compilation process. If the ‘articles’(記事) are considered ‘records’ of historical facts, then the critiques address the significance of those facts. King Jeongjo reviewed the historical critiques of the 17 histories prior to the Song Dynasty and revised those in the “History of Song” from a Joseon perspective. In particular, the critiques in the ‘Annals’, which include the achievements and faults of Song Dynasty rulers, were written with a focus on providing lessons for the monarchs of Joseon. The critiques in the ‘Biographies’ were also written concisely and coherently from a Joseon perspective. The ‘prefaces’ in the ‘Treatises’ address the evolution of various Song Dynasty institutions, serving as important reference material for establishing and operating political, economic, social, and cultural systems during King Jeongjo's reign. The “Songsa-jeon” provides a comprehensive view of the Song Dynasty's rulers, historical figures, and institutional changes, using their successes and failures as lessons for Joseon.
