Abstract

This article examines the theoretical discussions on ‘mixture’ in France in order to criticize and overcome the fixed identity based on the dualistic or Manichean interpretation that separates the Western and non-Western worlds, and explores the possibility of a new discussion on ‘modernity’ by relating it to the history of modern Europe. This article will examine the concept of “mixture”, analyzing the symbols and images that have been embodied in reality or in the imagination of cultures, as well as hybridisation among ethnic groups, and examining their meanings.
