Abstract

This study illustrates the impact of technology imitability and newness on the success of innovation by applying the VRIO analysis model, which is a resource-based management strategy analysis method. The analysis targets 1,827 samples belonging to the energy and related industrial technologies in the Small and Medium Business Technology Survey (2018 and 2019). The empirical model includes technology imitability and newness as explanatory variables and the innovation activities of the firms and the level of the technological capabilities as control variables. Newness is defined as whether the technology developed by the firm is the first in the world, the first in Korea, or the first in generalized technology. Imitability was measured as the period for external competitors to imitate the flagship product technologies held by respondents. The level of technical capability was measured by the ratio of responding firm's level of technical capability to the highest level in Korea about technology elements. The analysis results are as follows: Although imitability has a positive impact on the success of innovation, there are differences over the imitable time. For firms that took more than two years for competitors to imitate innovative technologies achieved by respondents, the rate of innovative success was the highest, and even when the competitors could imitate technologies in the shortest period of less than three months, the rate of innovative success was the second highest. In other words, it can be explained that technology imitability has a positive impact on innovation success of the SME because it is possible for SMEs to maintain competitiveness through the continuously development of technology superior products if technology imitation is too easy. Newness is not statistically significant when it was the first in the world or only some advanced countries, and SMEs that sought innovation for the first in Korea to develop technologies common in advanced countries were more likely to succeed. The innovation capabilities of SMEs consisted of innovative activities, the types of firm innovation certification, the industry type, and technical capabilities. Among them, if the industry type is the energy-related industry, if the firm is certified as a technology innovation firm, if it participated in technology development jointly for technology innovation, and the larger the expenditure for technology development, the higher the rate of technology innovation.
