Abstract

The amount of CO2 emissions in the construction industry is increasing every year, and previous studies have reported that CO2 emissions are high in the landscape construction stage. For this reason, the effect of reducing CO2 by greenery and plants in terms of carbon footprint of landscape space is uncertain. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish predictable data on CO2 emissions during planting in apartment. To accomplish this purpose, this study calculated CO2 emissions using the Tier 2 method proposed by the 2006 IPCC based on data from 20 planting projects constructed in public and private apartments. Based on these results, the public and private sectors were comparatively analyzed, and the green area and planting standards were also analyzed. As a result, although the public sector planted more trees than the private sector, the private sector’s CO2 emissions were 1.09 tCO2 per 100m2 of green area, which is higher than that of the public sector (1.02 tCO2). The reason for this was that the private sector planted more trees with a root diameter of more than 30cm than the public sector. In fact, trees above this standard accounted for 2.0∼6.9% of the total volume, but CO2 emissions accounted for 11.3∼28.8%. In addition, as a result of linear regression analysis, the increase in green area is directly proportional to CO2 emissions during construction, so it is necessary to calculate an appropriate green area through correlation with the amount of CO2 absorption from a life cycle perspective. Based on the above results, it is necessary to consider carbon reduction in order to determine the tree standard at the design stage as a suggestion to reduce CO2 emissions during planting work, and it is necessary to improve the legally recognized standards for tree planting. However, this study has limitations in generalizing it because it does not reflect carbon dioxide emissions according to the travel distance from the tree plantation.
