우리나라의 현대 정원문화 전개 양상을 이해하기 위해 월간지, 뉴스기사, 단행본, 논문, 웹사이트에서 관련 키워드를 도출하고, 검색과 자료 수집을 반복하여 주요 사건들을 추출하고 시간 순서로 배열하였다. 정리한 정보에서 현대 정원문화의 변곡점으로 파악한 경기정원문화박람회(2010), 정원 법률 공포(2015), 코로나 팬데믹(2020)을 기준으로 4개 시기를 구분하였다. 제1기(2009년 이전) 정원문화 태동기에는 사설 식물원 개원, 실내정원 출현, 정보의 대중화가 이루어졌다. 제2기(2010∼2014년) 정원문화 발아기에는 정원박람회 개최, 정원작가 등장, 공동체 생활정원문화 활성화, 전문단체 설립, 전문잡지가 창간되었다. 제3기(2015∼2019년) 정원문화 성장기에는 산림청의 법제도 마련, 국가정원․지방정원․민간정원 지정, 정원산업 단체 설립, 전문인력이 양성되었다. 제4기(2020∼2023년) 정원문화 확산기에는 대중의 정원에 대한 관심이 고조되었으며, 정부와 지자체의 정원사업 수행, 정원과 첨단기술․방송․예술 접목, 대학교에 정원학 전공이 개설되었다. 짧은 시간 동안 이루어진 정원 조성, 전시와 행사, 정원 법제도, 정원 교육, 정원 연구 개발, 정원 정보 확산과 같은 활동은 우리나라 현대 정원문화의 특성이라고 할 수 있다. 정원문화 전개 과정에 정원작가, 시민정원사, 조경 전문가 등 개인과 조경설계․시공업체, 건설사, 언론사 등 기업, 대학교, 학회․협회․센터 등 비영리법인의 다양한 민간 주체들이 참여하였는데, 법제도를 마련하고 사업비를 지원하는 산림청을 필두로 지방정부가 사업을 수행하는 형식으로 산․학․관․민이 연계된 지역 네트워크는 우리나라 현대 정원문화의 결실이다.
Abstract
To understand the development and trends of modern garden culture in South Korea, keywords related to the subject were extracted from monthly magazines, news articles, books, research papers, and websites, and search and data collection were repeated to extract key events and arrange them in chronological order. Four periods were identified with reference to specific events: the Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo (2010), the enactment of garden laws (2015), and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020). In the first period (pre-2009), private botanical gardens opened, indoor gardens emerged, and the popularization of garden-related information took place. In the second period (2010∼2014), garden expos were held, garden artists emerged, community garden culture was activated, and professional organizations were established, including the launch of specialized garden magazines. In the third period (2015∼2019), the Korea Forest Service established legal frameworks, designated national, local, and private gardens, garden industry associations was formed, and professional personnel was trained. In the fourth period (2020∼2023), there was increased public interest in gardens, and government and local initiatives for garden projects intensified. Gardens were integrated with advanced technology, broadcasting, and the arts, and universities introduced garden studies as a major. Garden culture activities were categorized into garden creation, exhibitions and events, garden education, garden research and development, and the dissemination of garden information. Activities such as the creation of gardens, exhibitions and events, garden legislation, garden education, garden R&D, and garden information dissemination can be considered characteristics of modern gardening culture in South Korea. Throughout the development of gardening culture, individuals such as garden designers, citizen gardeners, and landscape professionals, companies like landscaping, construction and media companies, nonprofit organizations like universities, societies and centers, and government bodies have actively participated. The collaborative efforts of government, academia, industry, and the public, led by the Korea Forest Service in establishing regulations and providing financial support, have formed a regional network where local governments execute projects. This collaborative network is the fruition of South Korea’s modern gardening culture.
