Abstract
Objectives: Awareness of one’s own blood pressure and blood sugar levels is a critical first step to- ward the early detection and effective management of chronic diseases such as hypertension and di- abetes. Individuals who are aware of their health status are more likely to engage in preventive be- haviors, adhere to treatment, and seek timely medical care. Therefore, improving public awareness is a fundamental component of strategies aimed at reducing the burden of chronic disease, particu- larly in aging populations. This study aimed to investigate awareness gaps in blood pressure and blood sugar levels and identify associated factors among residents of Suwon City. Methods: We an - alyzed data from the 2022 Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS), focusing on 3,640 participants from four districts in Suwon City (Yeongtong-gu, Paldal-gu, Gwonseon-gu, and Jangan-gu). The study examined demographic characteristics, disease awareness, medication use, and non-medication in- terventions. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, analysis of variance, and logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with disease awareness. Results: Significant differences in aware- ness of blood pressure and blood sugar levels were observed across the four districts. Awareness of blood pressure levels was highest in Jangan-gu, while awareness of blood sugar levels was highest in Yeongtong-gu; both were lowest in Paldal-gu. Awareness of both blood pressure and blood glucose levels was significantly associated with age, regional disparities, medication use, and education level. These disparities were closely linked to differences in demographics, educational attainment, and so- cioeconomic status across districts. Conclusion: This study reveals substantial district-level dispar- ities in blood pressure and blood sugar awareness in Suwon City. The findings highlight the need for district-specific health policies and interventions tailored to the unique characteristics and needs of each population group.
