Abstract

The symbolic Geobukseon (Turtle Ship) has been studied extensively in various fields. However, there is still a lack of research on the upper structure of the ship. The deck and the upper structure of Korean traditional ships also require further study. This is mainly due to the fact that only the lower parts of the ships have been found in most underwater excavations. Therefore, the study of superstructure has relied heavily on literature and drawings. It is necessary to use more diverse data. Korea has been investing significantly on the underwater excavation and restoration of traditional ships. Thanks to this effort, a large amount of data has been accumulated on the hull of traditional ships and the restoration of traditional ships. In addition, the technique of constructing hanok (traditional Korean house), which uses woods just like traditional ships, has been handed down to the present day. Based on all these data, this study has analyzed Geobukseon and its upper plate structure. The ship was equipped with four columns, two rows on the left and right sides, respectively. Lintels were installed vertically and horizontally installed on the columns. “ㄴ”-shaped cuttings were made on the left and right sides of the lintels as needed. With this, the ceiling plate and the outer plate of the threestory wall were fixed. The bow side was fixed with two wedges. The bow side was covered separately with five rows of open tops vertically to cover the part where the mast was placed. It is assumed that this shape was the basic structure of the upper plate of Geobukseon. Geobukseon’s upper plate structure has a total of four columns, a roof, and walls. There would also have been a floor to absorb the load of the plate and the recoil of the gun. The structure with separate columns and roofs, walls and floors can be seen as a single layer. It would have been combined with the structure below it to form a three-story structure.
