Abstract

A recent study on turn-continuations in English (Walker: 2001) shows that each type of increments can be classified in terms of a unique cluster of interactional, phonetic, and lexico-syntactic properties. However, Korean does not seem to be the case. Specifically, since increments in Korean data take either single adverbs or adverbs of adverbial phrases for each type of increments in most cases, I classify them in terms of the meanings in increments to the host in order to examine the different types of increments in Korean conversation: weakening increments, emphasizing increments, explanatory increments, and delimiting increments. In this paper, I will demonstrate that a lexical or syntactic form is not one of the criteria, but phonetic properties can be good factors to distinguish between one category and another in Korean data.
