Abstract
The goal of this paper is to suggest a revised analysis of the acquisition ESTAR in Spanish. It is well known that Korean students have difficulty distinguishing between the verbs SER/ESTAR. With reference to this aspect, I propose that SER/ ESTAR in Spanish must be redefined. In Spanish, only the verb SER is used as a copula. In relation to this view, I suggest that the copula SER is defined as the overt Spell-Out of the head functional COP(ula) in the Clausal Syntax. In addition, I propose that the verb ESTAR is analyzed as the overt Spell-Out of the node, EVENT, in the Lexical Syntax. This paper argues that the constructions with the verb ESTAR exhibit the prototypical features of coercion. In this view, ESTAR activates a reinterpretation mechanism when followed by an Individual-Level adjective phrase.
