Abstract
The structure of a split CP and the internal Merge of V2 seems to be similar between OE and PDE in the matrix clauses. By contrast, the structure of CP in PDE is much more flexible than that of OE in the embedded clauses. During the OE and early ME periods, the heavy use of subjunctive that-clauses and no introduction of for∼to-infinitives kept finite embedded clauses from employing a split CP. But from the late ME period, the loss of inflections and reanalysis of word order from SOV to SVO rendered a expanded CP possible. Thus, in the PDE embedded clauses, a split CP layer is easily arrayed, where such analytical thought and emotive expression as topicalization and focalization are spelled-out explicitly.
