초록

This paper addresses the multiple developments of the English verb accord, focusing on according to, in accordance with, and accordingly from a grammaticalization perspective. While according to grammaticalized with semantic change from ‘conforming to' to ‘as formulated or stated by', the meaning of in accordance with ‘in agreement or harmony with’ or ‘in conformity to' has not changed substantially. The other developed form of accord, accordingly, has characteristics of a discourse marker in that it is used to connect units in discourse logically, which had undergone semantic change from ‘correspondingly' to ‘so', ‘thus', or ‘as a result'. In this paper, it is suggested that according to, in accordance with, and accordingly are examples of polygrammaticalization of the English verb accord, illustrating their semantic and functional change.
