Abstract
Kang, SunOk. 2017. “A Study on An Antecedent Movement in (Re)labeling Analysis of Relative Clauses.” The Journal of Linguistic Science 82:1-18. This study questions Cecchetto and Donati's raising analysis of relative clauses. Cecchetto and Donati (2015) argue that relative clauses are not CP but NP in relative clause analysis based on Relabeling, stating that the antecedent raised from the object of a verb in the lower clause is merged with the determiner ‘the' in the main clause. Cecchetto and Donati also stated that this raising of the antecedent in the relative clause is an unmotivated, that is, unprobed movement, explaining this movement of the antecedent as a selectional property which the determiner ‘the' has (Cecchetto and Donati 2011). Pointing to the lack of empirical evidence in their analysis, this paper shows that antecedents in relative clauses make a motivated, probed movement to the main clause because the determiner ‘the' is the head of DP, which needs a complement. It is argued that the raising of an antecedent to the main clause is a motivated, probed movement in relative clauses. (Gyeongsang National University)
