Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out whether assimilation is responsible for the relativity of the amount of perceptual cues that each feature of consonants carries. In cross-linguistic patterns of place assimilation, nasals are known as a more frequent target of assimilation than stops, but I insist that in English the opposite is true. Alveolar nasal /n/ is the only target of place assimilation among nasals while alveolar stop /t, d/ and labial stop /p,b/ are the targets of place assimilation. Besides Nasals never experience manner assimilation. Another argument is that each of place and manner features contribute to place and manner assimilation other than manner features affect place assimilation. To prove this, using perceptual constraints, I compare and analyze clusters of stops and nasals within assimilation.
