Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the usage and differences on referring expressions in English and Korean. The referring expressions of English and Korean appear to be similar, but in fact, English is a binary system and Korean is a three-way system. In English, the referring expressions are mostly in the center of the speaker, but in Korean, the referring expressions in the center of the speaker and the listener are coexistent. It is not wrong to say that they come from the difference of culture and customs of people who speak English and Korean. It is necessary to keep in mind that the referring expressions of English are speaker-centered. In Korean, it is confirmed that people are more interested in the listener though they are speaker-centered. Among many possible reasons, the most notable reason is that they come from social, cultural and customary differences.
