Abstract

A first concern in EFL contexts is whether writing is sufficiently important for learners that it is taught explicitly in terms of their purposes on a large scale. The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers' and students' views on the purposes for writing in English for Korean EFL students, dealing with the most useful types of writing at university level. The data comprise questionnaire for writing teachers and interviews for students in order to combine qualitative and quantitative approaches. The findings revealed that the students' purposes for writing belonged to the micro-purposes, dependent not on the writing itself but on its power to help them to achieve success in their society. In the interviews, academic writing which includes reports, arguments, and essays on students' disciplines turned out to be important for students to learn on EFL writing courses. The conclusion indicates that there are important differences between the students' views about what will fulfill their desperate needs and interests in more effective learning of writing in English, and the teachers' views which focus on basic principles in terms of their own beliefs and preferences rather than concentrating on students' purposes and concerns.
