Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide insight into the errors related to the noun countability and present a more efficient pedagogical method. The experiment was conducted with 300 subjects selected from a sample of middle school, high school and university students in Daegu area. Questions were classified into the articles in the noun countability. Major findings of the test result are as follows: -The degree of the studentsacquisition of the articles is low, especially in the usage of the articles related to the conversion of the noun countability. -The overuse of the definite article is predominant among university students and the indefinite article among middle school students. -The underused errors of the zero article were not significantly reduced and remained persistent at all levels. -A large number of errors stem from the mechanical application caused by the memorization of drill patterns, which shows that students ignore the context of the situation at the moment of the discourse. It has been found that pragmatic-semantic variables are prevailing constraints on the Korean studentsinterlanguage development
