초록
This study investigates change in forms of prepositions and their frequencies of use between British and American English. For this, English prepositions are characterized into five categories, based on American English: preference for simple forms, increase of complex forms, transition of preposition for time and place, choice of different forms, and deletion of preposition. Several concrete prepositions with authentic and relevant example sentences are compared with American and British English for each category. Some strong trends shown in every relevant preposition item will be discussed, focusing on its forms, alongside original or slightly changed meanings. Moreover, frequency of actual prepositions between the two English variants is compared. Frequency will sometimes be compared with its use-ratio between American and British English. In addition, the reason why the forms of preposition are differently realized is also occasionally touched upon with regards to the aspects of sociocultural, practical or psychological phenomena. The compared data come from American and British corpus. In the last section, several educational implications are discussed and final remarks are made.
