초록
The purpose of this study is to provide an experimental acoustics-based account of the mapping relation between Korean and English vowels produced by Korean female university students speaking Daegu dialect. The results confirm that the Korean vowel system is reduced to a seven-vowel system, virtually merging between mid and low front vowels. Showing that the distribution of ten English vowels produced by Korean speakers roughly coincides with the Korean vowel space, this study discusses the way in which English vowels are plotted with reference to Korean vowels. Included in the account of the detailed picture inside the vowel space is the asymmetrical distribution of vowels into two extreme regions of high and low vowels by Korean speakers, in contrast with the equidistant distribution of vowels in Ladefoged(2006). Also discussed is the acoustic relationship of two adjacent vowels, which is represented as a function of the slope involved in them. Acoustic realization is represented in terms of the ratio between two slopes, produced by Korean and native speakers respectively. The results of this study provide supporting evidence for the general claim in language learning that L1 plays a crucial role in L2, more specifically in learning the L2 vowel system.
