초록
Burmese noun compounding shows some typical phonological phenomena whereby counterfeeding opacity and optionality take place on the surface. When two words, W1 and W2, are compounded over a morpheme boundary, it is frequently found that a tonal vowel is readily reduced to be a schwa. This gives rise to the opaque and transparent rule relations in Burmese morphology. The aim of this paper is two-fold: what typical phonological changes are found in Burmese word formation process of noun compounding and further how phonological rules interact with respect to each other. For the counterfeeding rule relation between vowel weakening and weak vowel deletion, the former is underapplied though its rule description is surface-true with respect to the latter. On the other hand, voicing extension and deaspiration are optionally applied, resulting in surface multiplicity. Other remainings are transparent with the feeding rule relation.
