초록

The purpose of this study is to explicate the construal operation on the conceptualization of the spatial location of one entity with regard to another entity by considering the variations such as geometrical properties adopted by English native speakers. This study is based on the theories of the Figure and the Ground organization (Talmy 2000b) and the Frame of Reference (Levinson 2003). The experiments were conducted for 96 English native speakers. The findings of this study are as follows. First, English speakers tend to recognize the position of the Figure based on their own orientation when the inherent orientations of the Figure and the Ground do not exist. Second, when the orientation of the Ground is present, the intrinsic orientation of the Ground is the mostly considered factor in conceptualizing the location of the Figure. Third, the different characteristics of orientation of the Ground do not play a major role when they decide the position of the Figure. Finally, they tend to ignore the distinction between left and right among the orientations the Ground has.
