초록
English auxiliaries are commonly assumed to move to T in tensed declarative clauses. This head movement is reflected on the word order where an auxiliary precedes an adverb. When VP ellipsis takes place, however, auxiliaries follow the adverb as if they were lexical verbs staying within vP. This paper provides a minimalist account of the perplexing phenomenon in terms of a bleeding effect arising from VP ellipsis. Specifically, it proposes that English auxiliaries cannot undergo head movement unless they are activated by receiving the relevant verbal feature from the complex head V-v. When this feature is lost as a result of VP ellipsis, the auxiliaries stay in situ and end up following an adverb.
