Abstract
Although corporate social responsibility activities (CSR) are generally known to improve financial performance, build favorable relationships with governments and communities, increase brand value, and improve consumer loyalty, there are not enough studies examining CSR activities conducted by foreign subsidiaries of multinational companies (MNCs) in host countries. In order to build favorable relationship with its local stakeholders and gain legitimacy in its host country, foreign subsidiaries have a strong incentive to develop CSR activities. However, since the CSR activities of the subsidiaries are strategic decisions at corporate level, the MNC’s overseas expansion strategies are likely to affect the subsidiaries’ CSR activities. In other words, when MNCs have local market orientation, subsidiaries are more likely to conduct CSR activities. In addition, they are more likely to implement CSR activities when the institutional distance between home and host countries is farther to reduce the cost of doing business abroad. In this study, we examined these relationships in the context of foreign affiliates engaged in wholesale and retail industry in Korea. We conducted a fixed-effect panel regression using a sample of 1,239 observations from 193 foreign subsidiaries of MNCs in Korea during 2002 to 2016. The result suggests that the local market orientation, which is measured by the availability of Korean websites, is found to have a positive relationship with CSR activities in the host country. In addition, the study finds the positive relationship between institutional distance and CSR activities in the host country. Lastly, the result shows that institutional distance positively moderates the relationship between local market orientation, which is measured by advertising intensity, and CSR activities in the host country. This study contributes to broaden our understanding of the CSR activities of MNCs in the host country by empirically identifying the relationship between local market orientation and CSR activities of MNC’s foreign subsidiaries.
