Abstract
Woongjo YouThis study empirically explores what explains the American foreign policy for the promotion of liberal democracy around world. After the mid-1970s, it has been one of the goals of American foreign policy to improve the liberal democracy around world. Regarding this fact, numerous empirical studies have attempted to test which perspective among humanitarian liberalism, realist liberalism, and critical liberalism can better account for the American foreign policy to promote liberal democracy around the world. In following, the three perspectives are empirically tested here by employing the data of National Endowment for Democracy (NED) which has been strengthened and utilized for the promotion of liberal democracy around the world since the end of the Cold War. What a variety empirical models including Heckman and GEEs in this study find are as follows. Firstly, as argued by humanitarian liberal perspective, the level of human rights is negatively associated with the distribution of NED. Second, however, it is uncovered that no role of realist liberalism is played in NED. The final reveals the fact that the size of bilateral trade between the U.S. and the recipient, which is one of the variables from the viewpoint of critical liberalism, is positively related to the distribution of NED, but in a weak sense. Overall, this study demonstrates the role of humanitarian and critical liberal perspectives in the American foreign policy for the improvement of liberal democracy around the world.
