Abstract

Lee Kwang-woonAmong the diverse voices in the poetry of Walt Whitman, the voice of the slaves is one of the most important ones in order to understand the nature of Whitman's poetry. Although Whitman's stance toward slaves is at times ambivalent, it is true that Whitman uses slavery as a poetic metaphor which represents all oppressed human dilemma including sexual oppression. Therefore, the readers of Whitman's poetry can discern the voices of the poetic speaker as a slave persona who attempts to draw on the reader's sympathy. The two features are revealed by the voice of the slave persona in Whitman's poetry. First, the slave persona justifies the liberation of slaves by the description of unduly oppressive circumstances. Second, the persona attempts to give freedom to oppressed people anywhere. Whitman endows the salve persona with Luciferic power to fight against any oppressed authority. However, he does not expect to solve the problem politically. Rather he wants to see all the people of the world gain their freedom through poetic imagination.
