Abstract
Body and Sex in D. H. Lawrence and W. Whitman’s PoetryYoung-Ok Jeon (Namseoul U) Whitman insisted that between body and soul there can be no distinction. Of all Whitman’s explorations, this was perhaps the most valuable for Lawrence, the discovery of the nature of our being. For Whitman and for Lawrence, the soul is in the body. While it is possible to speak, for convenience, of a duality, there can in truth be no separation. Lawrence and Whitman could not be considered spokesmen for the purely physical, as they paid ample tribute to man’s spiritual being, nevertheless much of their poetry is a passionate effort to rehabilitate the physical and give it full due. Against the Platonic and Christian separation of matter and spirit, they asserted their unity. To Whitman as to Lawrence, sex is not just a part of life; it was at the center, the source of vitality. In Lawrence’s poetry sex is the source to achieve consummation, the mysterious and transcendental status, and to be a whole man balanced the opposite elements. In Whitman’s poetry, however, sex is a way to develop both equality and democracy in America. So the role of man and woman cannot expand their existences beyond the parents of children and the brother and sister of America. While Whitman attempted to heal radical divisions, social and personal, Lawrence focused on the individual man and woman to become a ‘whole man’ and live creative life with vitality.
