연구배경: 모유의 많은 장점에도 불구하고 국내 모유수유율은 매우 저조하다. 모자 및 그 가족들에게 포괄적이고 지속적인 의료를 제공할 수 있는 가정의학과 의사는 모유수유율 향상에 많은 기여를 할 것으로 기대된다. 이에 가정의학과 전공의와 전문의를 대상으로 모유수유에 관한 지식과 태도, 경험 및 수련내용에 대한 설문조사를 통해 모유수유 실천에 필요한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 방법: 2004년 2월부터 3월까지 대한 가정의학과 개원의 협의회에 소속되어 있는 가정의학과 전공의와 전문의를 대상으로 전자우편을 이용하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문 도구는 Freed가 개발하여 미국 의사들의 모유수유관련 조사에 사용되었던 것으로, 모유수유에 관한 지식, 태도, 경험, 수련에 관한 문항으로 이루어져있다. 각 응답의 빈도 및 평균을 알아보고 각각의 연관성 여부를 알아보았다. 결과: 지식을 묻는 항목 중 ‘생후 6개월간은 모유가 가장 좋다’는 질문에 전공의 63%, 전문의 76%가 긍정적으로 답하였다. 유방농양 발생시 전공의 83%와 전문의 85%가 완전히 모유를 끊겠다고 응답하여 잘못된 지식을 가지고 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 태도를 묻는 문항 중 전공의 92%와 전문의 93%가 임산부에게 모유수유를 권하는 것이 가정의의 역할로 적합하다고 답했으나, 전공의의 87%와 전문의의 78%가 수련기간 중 모유수유 관련 내용을 배울 기회가 충분하지 못했다고 응답했다. 결론: 국내의 저조한 모유수유율을 향상시키기 위해서 가정의학과 의사의 중재가 요구되고 있다. 그러나 수련기간 중 모유수유에 관한 내용을 접할 수 있는 기회가 부족한 실정이므로, 모유수유에 관한 내용의 강조와 더불어 구체적인 교육 프로그램의 모색이 필요하다.
