Abstract

Korean Yang-ming scholars did not get involved with any authority or moral obligation or succumb to any kind of suppression. They accepted Yang-ming to resolve the problems of their time by their own will and judgment. They created Korean Yang-ming Studies out of it. Their concerns were to save their country from the invasions of foreign countries and free people from suppressions and sufferings that came from the ruling class as well as from foreign countries. To solve these problems they respected life thought and practiced it themselves. This paper studies the characteristics of life thought of Wang Yang-ming, the origin of Korean Yang-ming studies. Then it illustrates the life thought that can be found in the lives of Korean Yang-ming scholars such as Choi Meong-kiel, Chung Jae-doo, Kang-wha school, Park Eun-sick, and Chung In-bo. The life thought of Korean Yang-ming studies is characteristic of the following three aspects: the view of independent and practical human and the principle of human equality based on the doctrin of Hsin chi li and the doctrin of Chih-hsing ho-yi, the independent spirit of the times based on the adaptability on accasion, and the thought of the respect for human life based on the doctrine of Wan-wu yi-t'i.
