Abstract
Although the logical fallacy considered as an argument in Indian Logic is as multifarious as the types of logical fallacy in Western Logic, it is primarily more of material and informal than of formal. And there is a strong possibility of gap between the fallacy dealt with by the theoretic arguments and that found by the actual arguments in the text. In case of giving careful consideration to the theoretic fallacy exposed in the actual text called Brahmasūtra-bhāṣyam(BSBh), it may be said that the author neither makes a reference the terms of fallacy that are generalized in India nor commits any fallacious arguments. However, even if he doesn't refer the terms of fallacy in BSBh, he attaches great importance to figuring out right grounds and pseudo-grounds. Moreover, in BSBh he makes 'fallacy of appeal to unqualified authority' in relation to 'argument from authority' establishing his own philosophical position, and 'fallacy of straw man' in relation to 'argument from reasoning' negating other's. Apart from these, 'fallacy of weak analogy' is often found and many other fallacies are occasionally found in BSBh. The fallacious arguments in BSBh have implications as follows; First, the gap between theoretic fallacy and actual fallacy results from a simplicity of form of argument in connection with the former, distinct characteristics of the text to which the latter belongs, a relativity of the latter being dependent upon context and viewpoint. Second, the main features of fallacious arguments lie in the fact that two fallacies i.e. 'fallacy of appeal to unqualified authority' and 'fallacy of straw man' are subordinate to the aim of text, and that since 'reductio ad absurdum' is employed with regard to that aim the fallacies concerning with it are strikingly predominant. Third, 'fallacy of appeal to unqualified authority' makes sure that 'argument from reasoning' is the highest means of proof, 'fallacy of straw man' and 'fallacy of weak analogy' hint that the fallacious arguments are a kind of logical gesture or logical skill after all.
