E. Cassirer 신화관의 일반적 해석에 대한 비판적 고찰

본 논문은 E. Cassirer의 신화관에 대한 일반적 해석과 평가를 비판적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 삼고 있다. E. Cassirer는 그의 주저 『상징형식의 철학』을 비롯한 신화 연구를 통해 신화를 상징형식들의 체계 내의 하나의 독자적인 상징형식으로 규정한다. 또한 하나의 독립적 상징형식으로서의 신화는 모든 상징형식이 발생하는 자궁이다. 하지만 그의 사후 출간된 『국가의 신화』에서는 외견상 이와는 대립되는 관점이 개진된다. 『국가의 신화』에서 카시러는 ‘정치적 신화들’이라는 용어를 사용하며, 이 ‘정치적 신화들’을 ‘적’으로 규정한다. 일반적으로 카시러 철학의 주석가들은 이러한 서로 다른 두 규정을 카시러의 신화에 대한 관점의 전환으로 평가한다. 이러한 전환에 대한 입장에 있어 카시러가 사용하고 있는 ‘신화’ 혹은 ‘신화 자체’와 ‘정치적 신화들’을 동일한 의미로 이해된다. 하지만 이러한 입장은 자칫 카시러 철학의 의미 전체를 변경시키는 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 카시러에 있어 통일적 체계 내의 모든 상징형식들은 그 각각의 운명이 서로 밀접하게 결부되어 있어, 그것들 중 하나에 대한 유죄선고는 다른 모두에 대한 유죄선고를 의미하기 때문이다. 다시 말하면, 신화에 대하여 ‘적’이라는 유죄선고를 내리는 것은 다른 상징형식들 전부를 ‘적’으로 돌리는 것이 된다. 이러한 문제점을 피하기 위해서는 신화를 상징형식들의 체계에서 제거하거나 『국가의 신화』에서의 신화에 대한 관점도 일관적으로 이해해야 한다. 그러나 『국가의 신화』에 있어서도 신화는 여전히 하나의 독립적인 상징형식으로 규정되기 때문에, 해결의 방식은 일관성이라는 방향에서 이루어져야 한다. 따라서 본 논문은 세 가지 측면에서 이 점을 고찰하려 하며, 우선 카시러의 신화관 제시와 밀접하게 연관되어 있는 기존의 신화 접근 방식에 대한 비판의 일관성, 둘째 카시러의 신화 연구 동기의 일관성, 셋째 ‘신화’와 ‘정치적 신화들’의 구분 가능성을 논의할 것이다. 신화를 하나의 상징형식으로 규정하면서도 동시에 그것을 적으로 규정하는 것은 『국가의 신화』의 외견상 자기모순처럼 보인다. 하지만 이 논의를 통해 이러한 외견상의 자기모순은 해소될 수 있을 것이다. 왜냐하면 플라톤의 신화가 진정한 신화로 규정되지 않는 한, 정치적 신화들도 진정한 신화로 이해될 수 없기 때문이다.
Abstract
This paper's aim is to review the general interpretation of the E. Cassirer's view of myth critically. E. Cassirer determines the myth as an independent symbolic form within a unitary system of symbolic forms in his main work 『Philosophie der symbolischen Formen』 as well as another studies of the myth. And the myth, as independent symbolic form, is also the womb from which symbolic forms are generated. But, in his 『The myth of the State』, published after his death, a standpoint seemingly opposed is stated. In this 『The myth of the State』, Cassirer uses the term of 'political myths' which is determined as 'adversary'. Generally, this two different determinations is evaluated as inverting his own standpoint of the myth by his commentators. The opinion of this inverting understands that the Cassirer's terms, 'myth' or 'myth as such' and 'political myths' have the same meaning. However, this opinion could result in converting the whole meaning of E. Cassirer's philosophy. For in the symbolic forms within the unitary system, each fate has a close relation, a judgment of guilty of the one of forms is the same judgment of guilty of the others. That is to say, if we declare guilty for the myth as adversary, all of the other symbolic forms also would be determined as adversary. To solve this problem, the myth should be removed in the system of symbolic forms, or the standpoint of the myth should be understood coherently in his whole philosophy. For, in 『The myth of the State』, myth is still determined as a independent symbolic form, the direction of the solution of this problem should be that of coherence. In this sense, I will discuss in turn that first, the coherence of Cassirer's critic of the established approaches to the myth, which has close relation to the his own approaching method, second, the coherence of Cassirer's motive of investigation into the myth, third, the possibility of distinction between 'myth' and 'political myths'. It is seemingly self-contradict that myth is determined as a independent symbolic form as well as adversary in 『The myth of state』. But, in this discussion, it could be exposed that the seeming self-contradiction of 『The myth of state』 is not the case. Because the 'political myths' could not be understood as genuine myth in so far as the Plato's myth are not determined as genuine myth in 『The myth of the State』.
