분석철학이 태동한 지 어언 한 세기 넘는 세월이 흘렀다. 그 동안 분석철학은 영어권 세계를 중심으로 진행되다가 지금은 서양철학의 지배적 흐름으로 정착되면서 하나의 전통으로 굳어졌다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 현재 분석철학의 상태에 대한 논의는 비관적 전망과 낙관적 전망이 교차한다. 한쪽에서는 분석철학이 번창하고 있고, 앞으로도 계속 그러하리라는 낙관적 전망이 있는가 하면, 다른 쪽에서는 분석철학의 “사망”이나 “소멸”, 또는 “위기”를 거론하면서 분석철학이 심한 중병에 걸려 더 이상 번창하지 못할 것이라는 비관적 전망도 나오고 있다. 이 논문은 신조적 분석철학 개념을 비판적으로 검토한다. 신조적 분석철학 개념에 따르면, 분석철학은 세 가지 신조, 즉 형이상학 거부, 언어적 전회, 과학과 철학의 관계에 대한 특정한 견해로 규정된다. 필자는 상당수 분석철학자들이 이런 신조를 공유하고 있음을 지적하겠지만, 궁극적으로 이런 특성이 분석철학의 정의특성이 될 수 없음을 밝힐 것이다. 그러고 나서 분석적 정의를 통해 분석철학을 밝히려는 시도의 일반적 난점을 지적한 다음, 분석철학 개념을 이해할 수 있는 새로운 방안을 전망해볼 것이다.
Abstract
Analytic philosophy is roughly 100 years old, and it is now the dominant force within Western Philosophy. It has been prevailed all over the world; it is in the ascendany in Germanphone countries and it has made significant inroads even countries once regarded as hostile, such as France. At the same time there are dark views about 'demise' of analytic philosophy, about being 'defunct' or at least in 'crisis', and complaints about its 'widely perceived ills.' The aim of this paper is to introduce and critically examine doctrinal conceptions of analytic philosophy. According to doctrinal conceptions of analytic philosophy, it stands out by virtue of a particular range of problems and doctrines to these problems. I shall discuss definitions of analytic philosophy by reference to three doctrines: the rejection of metaphysics, the linguistic turn, the naturalistic turn. The idea of defining analytic philosophy by reference to doctrines is striking plausible. Nevertheless, I show that these doctrines cannot serve as a defining characteristics of analytic philosophy. Finally, I present aproaches to analytic phiosophy that do not take the form of definitions in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions.
