Abstract

A human being realizes herself or himself only in communal relationship with the other. Thus, we have a solemn calling to explore further the communal relationships that enables us not only to shatter all human dominations but also to protest against all kinds of oppressions and further re-create all relationships in all humanities and even the relationship between humanity and the natural world. The main theme in this study is the new vision of the communal relationships that are to be achieved in Korea, wherein the initiation of the Triune God's sacrifice in the form of kenosis is revealed. This paper does not advocate a certain type of objective communal relationship, whether it is based on capitalism and socialism. Commercialized capitalism and authoritative socialism need to be critically reviewed in light of the kenotic-sacrificial communal relationship. We urgently need to create a new communal relationship where authentic sharing and serving communal relationships are graciously and creatively performed. It is the very nature of the kenotic communal relationship to welcome the stranger, the marginalized, and even the enemy in an embrace of divine hospitality which is incarnated in the kenotic communal relationship. The kenotic communal relationship in the early church was a dynamic power of serving, vulnerability, interdependence, and sacrifice for one another. As Kenotic love must transform our understanding of power, and of human power in Korean socio-political relationship. It is the power strong enough to be vulnerable in weakness for others, to suffer with and for others, to rejoice with and for others, to give one's life for others. It is the order to be first enough to serve with a status of server in humbleness for others, to guide with and for others, to give one's life for others. This is the power and the order revealed in the kenotic communal relationship. There are paradoxical features of kenotic submission and sacrifice as a source of both liberating and oppressive experiences for most Korean women. Submission is viewed by women as a strategy to cope with their domestic problems and improve domestic situations. Though Korean women's submission and sacrifice is under-theorized or undervalued in most gender studies, we should not disregard the potential for mother's kenotic submission and sacrifice to cope with their domestic and social oppressions, and gain empowerment and hope. Korean women as mothers were responsible not simply for meeting the physical and emotional needs of the family, but for its ultimate integrity and survival. A woman's familial role as the mother of children takes precedence over her identity as wife. The gender identities of Korean women tend to be inseparably tied to their family-oriented self-conception as mothers. Korean Christian women have struggled and survived not in a way of against but in a way of in oppressive patriarchal context. With the power of their kenotic submission and sacrifice, they have been liberated to be servant mothers.
