Abstract

Criticizing Husserl's transcendental phenomenology and language theory, Jacques Derrida attempted to dismantle the metaphysical premise in Husserl's phenomenology. Husserl distinguished signs into expression (Ausdruck) and indication (Anzeichen), treating expression as the bearer of pure meaning. However, Derrida rejects this hierarchical distinction and argues that the material mediation of signs, particularly indicative signs, plays a central role in the constitution of meaning. He claims that meaning can never exist as a transcendent presence but always emerges through its relation to absence. In his commentary on Husserl’s Origin of Geometry, Derrida emphasizes that in order for meaning to endure and for ideal objects to be transmitted, writing and inscription are indispensable. In this context, writing is not merely a supplementary means but the essential medium that enables the historical transmission of ideal objects through their historicization. Derrida later expands this argument by critiquing Husserl’s notion of the monological voice of the transcendental subject, asserting that pure meaning is always constituted in correlation with signs of indication. As a result, Derrida proposed a new framework for the composition of language and meaning beyond Husserl's metaphysical structure.
