초록
In this study, the electrochemical performance and removal efficiencies of organic matter and nutrients from real swine wastewater containing high concentrations of pollutants under different pH conditions (initial pH 7.0 and pH 8.5) using multi-electrode inserted air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were compared. A maximum power density of 9.34 W/m3 and a maximum current density of 42.83 A/m3 were obtained in the MFCs under alkaline conditions (pH 8.5), which were 35.9% and 64.5% higher, respectively, than in the reactor initially adjusted to pH 7.0. The high efficiencies of 73.0%, 63.0%, and 85.5% for COD, TP, and TN removal were achieved under pH 8.5 than pH initial 7.0 conditions, respectively. The removal of nitrogen in swine wastewater was mostly due to the high NH3 /NH4+ ratio at alkaline pH, and more than 80% of nitrogen could be removed by diffusion reaction. It was confirmed that increasing the surface area of the membrane and the cathode electrode could lead to more efficient removals of organic matter and nitrogen. This observations could contribute to development of wastewater treatment plants for simultaneous wastewater treatment and bioenergy generation.
