Abstract : In this study, an electrode catalyst was prepared by dispersing a Pt-Ru onto an electrospun nanocomposite carbon fiber for applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). To enhance the specific surface area and electrical conductivity of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based nanocomposite carbon fibers containing carbon nanotube (CNT), oxidation stabilization and carbonization processes were carried out, followed by micronization using ball milling. In addition, by dispersing Pt-Ru in the nanocomposite carbon fiber powder, a novel fuel cell electrode catalyst with excellent catalytic activity and performance was developed, and its characteristics were investigated. The Pt-Ru-CNT/PAN electrode prepared by highly dispersing Pt-Ru on a nanocomposite carbon fiber support exhibited superior catalytic activity and conductivity compared to the commercial electrode Pt/C. Moreover, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) incorporating the Pt-Ru-CNT/PAN electrode catalyst was applied to both proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), showing improved performance compared to commercial electrodes.
