Abstract
Critical evaluation in choreography education is important, for it provides student choreographers opportunities to investigate and examine various meanings in dance works. However, critical discussion in the choreography class has been usually dominated by a choreographer teacher. When the teacher has critical authority in the choreography class, students tend to accept and imitate a teacher's critical assumptions or principles which are not examined in details. In this case, it is very difficult for students to develop and extend their critical assumptions and principles, that is, their dance grounds. Thus, the purpose of this study is to provide the approach for critical evaluation in the choreography class, which enables students to analyze and evaluate dance works by themselves. The approach for critical evaluation consists of five stages: observation, analytical writing, interpretation, evaluation, and choreography recommendation. The approach suggested is expected to help students develop critical thinking skills for dance understanding.
