The purpose of the study is to explore the representation of masculinities in Yuri Grigorovich's Spartacus, thereby enhancing the understanding of ideas of gender and masculine bodies displayed in this ballet work. Robert Connell’s theory of hegemonic, subordinated, complicit and marginalized masculinity is employed, as it provides a useful model to analyze divergent forms of masculinities, particularly shown through the power relations of male characters in Spartacus. Thus, this paper identifies different masculinities that are presented, not only through the individual portrayal of male characters, but also through the relationship between the roles and their positions of power.
Abstract
