The Meaning and Structure of Lexical Chumsawis in Korean Traditional Dances: With the Focus on Mok-jung-gwa-jang in Bongsan Mask Dance

This study categorizes the meaning and structure of lexical chumsawis for Mok-jung-gwa-jang in Bongsan Mask Dance. The findings of this study are as follows. Firstly, Mok-jung-gwa-jang systematically categorizes meaningful lexical chumsawis, and shows its meaning and structure instead of focusing on the moves that used to be the key in conventional chumsawi studies. This can help to succeed Korean tradition in dances as well as provide valuable materials to develop today’s dance language and moves. Secondly, lexical chumsawis are gathered to become a maru while marus are gathered to become a dance. Since this is an important process, the study on lexical chumsawis can provide a fundamental base to understand the structure of marus and the entire dance, making it possible to analogize unrevealed meaning.
Abstract
