This paper presents a trend analysis by examining the factors of population growth, quality of housing and gaps in coverage by basic urban services, education and health services on the northern Mexico border area. The data show that in this area that includes 80 municipalities and more than 7 million people distributed along one of the world's largest international borders (approximately 3,200 kilometers long), there are large disparities between the towns of larger and smaller population and significant social deficits persist even in the largest cities of the strip. This situation entails challenges that require urgent and differentiated attention of all government levels authorities. For small communities the main challenge is survival, considering that the majority have negative population growth rates; for larger populations the urgency lies in reconciling their indices of economic dynamism with population growth, as well as with providing the infrastructure and the indispensable services required for social and economic development.
