Abstract

This paper borrows Margolis' theory of art to broaden the humanistic horizon of medieval dance, which is called the 'dark age of culture and art'. Based on Margolis' argument, "Art is not only understood and exists in a physical form, but can be interpreted in various ways in the histor- ical and cultural context to which it belongs." Medieval dance was in- terpreted through oriented attributes, historicality, and fluidity, which were the main issues of his art theory. First, medieval dance reflects the structure of a strict feudal society and has different oriented attributes. Clergy and aristocrats were means for socializing and feast in religious ceremonies and events, and farmers mainly expressed a collective con- sciousness and solidarity to be freed from hard life at festivals or public places. Second, looking at the perception and method of dance in relation to historicality and fluidity, medieval dance is an artistic creation that re- flects complex changes in society and culture of the Tang age, and in the late period, it changed from the function of early rituals or offerings to a form of self-expression. In addition, it can be seen that the object of worship has changed from an ancient natural god to Jesus, but is follow- ing the original form of primitive dance.
