Abstract

This study examines the potential for aesthetic expansion in con temporary dance through Artaud's theory of the Theatre of Cruelty. Focusing on Wim Vandekeybus's 〈Blush〉 and Hofesh Shechter's 〈Clowns〉, it investigates dance structures where emotion, philosophy, and violence intersect through the language of the body and the trans mission of sensation. 〈Blush〉 articulates the rupture and catharsis of emotion through a psychological and philosophical body, whilst 〈Clown s〉 exposes social anxiety within the opposition of rhythm and instinct, violence and play. Both works, grounded in Artaud’s concepts of meta physics, liberation, alchemy, and spectacle, demonstrate how the body op erates as a medium of thought that exceeds merely functional movement. This highlights contemporary dance's expressive expansiveness in reveal ing existential truth through emotional collision and sensory tension, sug gesting art's potential to evolve into a realm of sensory thinking that transcends verbal language.
