Abstract

This study compares and analyzes two re-choreographed versions of Don Quixote by Alexander Gorsky and Jungbin Song, both based on Marius Petipa’s original ballet. This analysis focuses particularly on the dream scene, examined through the lens of Jungian analytical psychology. Gorsky’s Don Quixote presents the protagonist as a passive supporting figure, emphasizing immature consciousness marked by inner limitations and helplessness, rather than a gradual transformation through a heroic journey. In contrast, Jungbin Song’s Don Quixote repre- sents the protagonist as a young knight. His dynamic dances and active engagement with Dulcinea symbolically portray the rebirth of heroic con- sciousness, self-exploration, and the integration of the Anima. This study argues that re-choreography goes beyond mere restoration or re- production of the original work, functioning as a complex interplay be- tween archetypes of the collective unconscious and the choreographer’s artistic imagination.
