초록
The North Korean energy situation is worsening daily and it not only negatively affects the North Korean society and economy but also poses a large burden on South Korea. This research compared the North and South Korea’s current energy and power production status. It also examined North Korea’s current supply and demand for energy by sources. North Korea’s primary energy consumption in 2006 was less than 8% and power generation was a mere 6%, compared to South Korea. Under the energy self reliance policy, North Korea relies heavily on the abundant hydro and anthracite for energy resources. North Korea is, however, experiencing difficulties in energy production because of aging infrastructure and equipment as well as lack of fuel. To remedy the energy shortage, North Korea is attempting to revamp and repair the facilities of power and coal production, but it is facing difficulties because of its economic crisis. The causes for North Korea’s energy crisis can be found from its economic downfall, changes in diplomatic relationships, natural disasters, and failed energy policies. To rebuild North Korea’s industry and economy – departing from the energy and economic crisis – it is necessary to implement various policies that are founded on the thorough understanding of North Korea’s distinct circumstances.
