Abstract
Experiments on bioleaching of toxic heavy metals from three abandoned Au-Ag mine (Songcheon, Myungbong, and Dukum) tailings were conducted using a sulfur-oxidizing bacterium, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans. The bacteria led to lower pH and higher redox potential than abiotic controls. Bioleaching resulted in the highest extraction of As from Songcheon and Myungbong mine tailings which were the most contaminated with As, and removal rates were two times higher than abiotic controls. Dukum mine tailings with high amount of Pb and Zn showed slightly high extraction and removal rate of Zn. Most extracted Fe existed as dissolved Fe3+ which is a strong oxidant and leads to oxidative dissolution of mine tailings. However, extracted Fe in abiotic controls existed as colloidal suspensions of Fe oxide/hydroxide and thus caused re-adsorption of the extracted heavy metals onto them.
