Abstract

This study explores the small-scale Buddhist patronages of the Chinese immigrants in Northern Kyūshū during the 12th and 13th centuries. It aims to bring to light the Chinese immigrants’ active involvement in the Buddhist religious affairs of creating&the “sutra containers” excavated from the sutra mounds and the “Satsuma pagodas”&for their personal wishes. Firstly, it reveals how the Chinese participated as donors or middlemen providing supplies imported from Song China for creating the sutra mounds by investigating the inscriptions on the sutra containers. Secondly, it highlights how the Chinese stonemasons introduced meiyuan stone, also from China, to craft a new type of pagoda, subsequently named “Satsuma pagoda.” Examining the two cases of object-making practice, this paper explores how the Chinese immigrants assimilated into the material culture of the northern regions of Kyūshū. Through this study, it became apparent that the Chinese immigrants’ utilization of the Song materials had been a sheer preference that gave them accessibility, familiarity, and convenience. Concurrently, the practical usage of their native objects paved the way for smoother cultural assimilation and settlement in the Japanese milieu.
