예비교사의 다문화 멘토링 참여 경험에 관한 사례 연구

이 연구는 다문화 멘토링 프로그램에 참여한 중등 예비교사의 교육 경험의 의미를 이해하여 효과적인 예비교사 다문화 교육과정 구성의 시사점을 찾는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 A대학교 사범대학에서 다문화 멘토링 프로그램에 참여한 예비교사들을 대상으로 질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 제보자들은 다문화가정 아동에 대한 접촉 경험이나 관심이 없는 상황에서 교육과정의 일환으로 멘토링에 참여하였다. 이러한 과정에서 제보자들은 적절한 조력 없이 멘티의 문제를 파악하고 대응하는 데 어려움을 겪었다. 다문화 멘토링은 제보자들이 다문화가정 아동을 처음으로 접촉하는 계기가 되었다. 또 멘티가 처한 교육 상황에 대한 맥락적인 이해에 기초하여, 다문화가정 아동의 정서적 어려움에 대해 공감하게 되면서 제보자들은 아동의 맥락을 고려한 멘토링 방법에 대해 고민하게 되었으며, 다문화적 환경에서 교사의 역할과 자신의 인식, 다문화교육에 대한 인식을 돌아보고, 반성적으로 성찰하게 되었다. 이러한 결과는, 다문화 멘토링이 단순히 예비교사들에게 문화적 접촉의 기회를 제공하는 것을 넘어, 다문화가정 아동에 대한 맥락적 이해에 기초하여, 자신의 인식과 태도를 돌아보고, 다문화적 환경에서 교사의 역할에 대해 성찰하는 긍정적인 매개체가 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 따라서 본 연구는 예비교사의 경험에 대한 반성에 기초를 두고, 반성적 다문화 멘토링 프로그램을 실시할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore preservice teachers' experiences in a multicultural mentoring program. A case study is conducted through using semi-structured interviews with future teachers at a College of Education, who participated in a multicultural mentoring program. It appeared that participants in this study took part in the program without any prior encounter with children from multicultural families. It is this lack of personal experience that brought the future teachers difficulty. A break-through is made when these student teachers began to realize cultural differences through a day-to day contact with children from multicultural families on the basis of sympathetic understanding of emotional issues that often trouble their mentees. In other words, participants in this study began to take into account the context in which their mentees are taught and raised, in approaching to the process of mentoring. In addition to this, there was a sign that these future teachers began to reflect on the role of teachers in multicultural education as well as their own attitude toward cultural diversity. Taken together, a multicultural mentoring program can not only provide an opportunity to encounter with cultural differences for future students but also equip them with a self-reflection both on their own attitude toward children with a multicultural background and on the role of teachers in a multicultural society. In conclusion, more attention needs to be drawn to developing self-reflective multicultural mentoring programs for future teachers, with a particular focus on a systematic approach to professional development.
