Abstract

Since early 90’s, many leading companies implemented enterprise resource planning (ERP) system in order to enhance their competitive advantage. In its early stage of ERP adoption, called core ERP, the focus was on integrating a firm’s internal processes; so that, increasing its internal efficiency. Some skepticism arose as a few success stories have been reported from the implementation experiences. More recently, firms those implemented core ERP system began to expand their ERP system across their supply chain in order to enhance the supply chain capability by adding and integrating various supply chain management (SCM) tools. Many research have been done how to implement and what firms expect from ERP system. In particular, most of the research focused on critical success factors regarding implementation methodology. Other than a particular methodology for implementing the core ERP system, implementation approach for SCM tools on their existing ERP system should be different from the one for the core ERP. Most approaches fall on the continuum between waterfall cycle and concurrent methodology. Limited to the environment when a firm adds and integrates SCM tools on its existing ERP system, this study proposes four determinants to affect the position of the approach on that continuum: knowledge characteristic, application characteristic, software lifecycle and implementation environment. The proposed framework was tested based on a case.
