초록
Today’s market rivalry is often called “capability-based competition” in which companies use their capabilities to sense and respond to evolving customer needs with speed, quality, cost, flexibility, etc., in order to survive in a fierce globally competitive marketplace. The purpose of this study is to propose and theoretically justify 21st century logistics capabilities that provide companies competitive advantage while creating customer value. Specifically, it is argued that traditional logistics capabilities including customer service and operational excellence are not enough in today’s supply chain-against-supply chain competition. Instead, logistics requires a systemic view to offer companies boundary spanning capabilities – interfunctional coordination, supply chain collaboration, and innovation – all of which are based on the strong information capability of logistics. This study contributes to logistics knowledge creation by explaining a pivotal role of logistics in supply chain-wide integration and innovation, and offering an integrative theoretical framework on which future empirical research can be based.
