Abstract
It is generally assumed in cost accounting that the relation between costs and volume is symmetric for volume increases and decreases. Recent studies including Anderson et al.(2003) documented that costs are "sticky"-that is, whether costs increase more when activity rises than they decrease when activity falls by an equivalent amount. Using Korean manufacturing firms' logistics costs, we investigate whether logistics costs are sticky and how the degree of stickiness of logistics costs varies with firms' characteristics such as days of holding inventory and tangible asset intensity. Our main results are as follows. First, we find that logistics costs are sticky, which is consistent with empirical evidence reported in prior research. Our empirical result shows that logistics costs increase on average 0.599% per 1% increase in sales but decrease only 0.447% per 1% decrease in sales. That is, the relation between logistics costs and sales revenue is asymmetric for sales revenue increases and decreases. The result can be interpreted that managers are slower in adjusting the logistics resources when sales decrease than when sales increase. Secondly, we find that the degree of stickiness of logistics costs is weaker for firms with more days of holding inventory. The result might imply that compared with managers facing higher inventory turnover ratio, managers facing lower inventory turnover ratio more timely adjust the resource committed to logistics when sales decrease. Lastly, we empirically find that stickiness of logistics costs is more pronounced in situations where tangible asset intensity are higher. It can be interpreted that managers facing higher tangible asset intensity are slower in reducing the resource committed to logistics in response to decrease in sales than mangers facing lower tangible assets intensity ratio.
